Walk-In Tattoo Guide: What to Expect at Evolution Tattoo

By The Evolution Team

A walk-in tattoo is one of the most common ways people get tattooed at our shop, and it is one of our favorite ways to meet new clients. We are Evolution Tattoo, and since 2006 we have been tattooing and piercing the people of Reno Nevada out of our studio on South Virginia Street. Some clients plan a full sleeve for months. Others pull into our parking lot on a Friday afternoon with an idea in their phone and thirty minutes to spare. Both are welcome at Evolution Tattoo. This guide covers everything we think you should know before you stop by for a walk-in tattoo, including what we can usually do same day, how our tattoo walk-ins actually work, and how to give yourself the best shot at getting into a chair the moment you arrive.

Why We Accept Tattoo Walk-Ins

Tattooing has always had a walk-in culture, and we have never wanted to lose that. A shop that only takes appointments can feel closed off to someone getting their first piece. We would rather you feel comfortable pushing the door open, looking at flash on the walls, and talking to an artist face to face without committing to anything.

Tattoo walk-ins also serve a practical purpose. Not everyone lives in Reno Nevada year-round. We tattoo a lot of visitors, students at the University of Nevada, people in town for a convention downtown, and folks passing through on their way to Tahoe. A walk-in tattoo is often the only realistic option for someone with a few free hours in the city, and we have built our schedule to accommodate that.

At Evolution Tattoo, there is also the simple fact that good ideas do not always arrive on schedule. Plenty of the tattoos we are proudest of started as a spur of the moment walk-in tattoo that turned into a long conversation and a much better design than the client originally had in mind.

How a Walk-In Tattoo Works at Our Shop

When you arrive at our Reno Nevada shop, the first thing we do is find out what you want. Bring a reference photo, a rough sketch, a piece of handwriting, or just a description. From there, one of our artists will talk through placement, size, and style with you, then tell you honestly whether it is something we can complete that day.

If an artist is available, we will draw it up, price it, and get you in the chair. If the shop is busy, we may ask you to wait a bit or come back later in the evening. For larger walk-in tattoo requests, we might book you for the following day, so the artist has time to prepare a proper drawing rather than rushing it. We would rather delay a tattoo by a day than put something on your skin we are not proud of.

Pricing for tattoo walk-ins at Evolution Tattoo depends on size, detail, placement, and how long the piece takes. We will always quote you before any needle touches skin, so there are no surprises. Bring a valid photo ID. Nevada law requires it every time, no exceptions, even if we tattooed you last month.

What Kinds of Designs Work Best for Walk-Ins

Small to medium pieces are the sweet spot for tattoo walk-ins. Script and lettering, simple line work, fine line botanicals, traditional flash, memorial dates, small black and grey pieces, matching tattoos for couples or friends, and single session color work all tend to fit comfortably into a walk-in tattoo slot.

Full sleeves, back pieces, large scale cover-ups, and detailed portraits are a different animal. Those still start with a conversation, and you are welcome to walk in and have it. We will look at what you have, talk through the approach, and set up a proper appointment with the right artist. Our team handles custom work, portraits, and cover-ups regularly, so a complex project is never a problem here. It just usually is not a same-day one.

Cover-ups deserve a special note. People often walk in hoping to cover an older tattoo on the spot. Sometimes we can. More often, a cover-up needs a custom design built specifically around the existing tattoo, which takes drawing time. Come in, let us see it in person, and we will tell you exactly where you stand.

The Best Times to Stop By

Our doors in Reno Nevada are open seven days a week, and we start taking tattoo walk-ins at 11:00 AM. Sunday through Thursday we tattoo until 8:00 PM, and on Friday and Saturday we stay open until 10:00 PM.

Weekday afternoons are typically the quietest window and the easiest time to get a walk-in tattoo without waiting. Friday and Saturday nights are our busiest stretch by a wide margin, especially when there is an event downtown. We still take tattoo walk-ins on those nights, but expect a wait, and understand that arriving twenty minutes before close does not leave enough time for anything meaningful.

A quick phone call before you drive over is never a bad idea. Reach us at (775) 786-3865 and we can tell you who is working, what the wait looks like, and whether your idea is realistic for that day.

How to Prepare Before You Walk In

A little preparation makes a walk-in tattoo go much smoother for you and for us. Eat a real meal beforehand, because getting tattooed on an empty stomach is a bad experience for everyone involved. Drink water. Skip alcohol entirely the day of, since we cannot tattoo anyone who has been drinking. Wear clothing that gives easy access to the area you want tattooed.

Because tattoo walk-ins move quickly, have your reference material ready and know roughly how big you want the piece and where it is going. Bring your photo ID. If you are a minor, our policy requires you to be at least 17, accompanied by a parent, with photo ID for both of you and a copy of your birth certificate, and we do not tattoo minors on the hands, forearms, face, or neck.

We Take Body Piercing Walk-Ins as Well

Alongside tattooing, Evolution Tattoo offers professional body piercing, and the same open door applies. Ears, helix, nostril, septum, navel, and standard body piercings are all typically available without an appointment. Our piercer works with quality jewelry and sterile single-use equipment and will walk you through healing and aftercare before you leave. If you have questions about downsizing jewelry or a piercing that is not healing well, call the shop and ask for the piercer directly.

Why People Choose Evolution Tattoo in Reno

We have been voted Best of Reno and Best of RN&R year after year, which we do not take lightly. Those awards come from the people of Reno Nevada, not from us. What earns them is consistency: clean work, a clean shop, honest pricing, and artists who treat a small walk-in tattoo with the same care as a project that takes twenty hours.

Our Reno Nevada artists cover custom design, portraits, cover-ups, traditional, black and grey, fine line, and color work. Whoever is on the floor when you arrive will be someone we trust with your skin.
